I follow a lot of work from home and nomadic blogs, and in the comment sections I see people asking and wanting more chat jobs, so here I am with a master list of companies that hire remote and work at home chat agents.
Where can you find remote chat jobs?
1. Call Centers
If you’ve ever worked at a call center, you know that internal chat support is very common. If you apply to be a work at home telephone agent, you can potentially move up into a chat support position once you have some tenure and learn the account that you’re working for. Simply said, keep phone jobs in mind since one of the paths to move into is a chat support role.
2. SaaS Companies
Another common place to find work at home chat jobs is to take a look at any SaaS (Software as a Service) company’s career page. For instance companies like Buffer, Flywheel, Later, Automattic, and GitHub all have customer facing rolls and need customer service professionals to fill these positions. It’s common that SaaS companies have chat and e-mail vs phone support. If you’re looking for a remote chat job, I suggest checking out tech companies career pages because they’re likely to have a position.
3. Job Boards
As always you can find remote chat support jobs on Indeed.com, GlassDoor, Jobs.com, Monster.com, etc. When searching these sites use keywords like “remote,” “work at home,” and “telecommute.” If you want to be more specific and narrow your job search down to remote job boards only check out the article Find Work at Home Jobs on These 50+ Websites.
What experience or skills do chat agents need?
To work at home and be successful as a chat support agent you will need impeccable written language skills.
You’ll also need to be able to type quickly and accurately. If you have trouble increasing your typing speed you may want to look into text expander software, which will increase your words per minute.
Most importantly, since being a chat support agent is customer facing, it’s a bonus that you have experience in customer service. Don’t fret if you’ve never worked in customer service before. Essentially you must have a friendly demeanor, a positive attitude, and impeccable communication skills in order to be successful as a chat agent.
wahwithme Recommended Online Chat Jobs:
Apple
Apple hires publicly for their phone positions and you have the option to move into chat support positions once you gain some experience on the phones. Apple offers competitive pay and employee benefits for their At Home Advisors. They have more than just chat jobs and lots of opportunity for growth and movement within their company. If you want to get your foot in the door at a tech company and possibly change roles down the road, I highly recommend applying at Apple. Read more about Apple here.
Automattic
Automatic is a fully remote company and they hire employees all over the world. They have a position called a Happiness Engineer, which is essentially chat, email, and forum support for their SaaS products including WordPress, Jetpack, WooCommerce, Gravatar, and many more. If you have experience with WordPress and know a little bit of CSS and HTML apply. Their hiring process is unique and a lot of work, but if you’re determined and passionate you can do it! If you’re interested, you can read more about remote jobs at Automattic here.
Arise Virtual Solutions
Arise virtual solutions offers contracts to phone and chat support agents. They’re a little bit different, because they offer you the opportunity to start your own independent business or work under another business owner, the choice is yours. Since you’re an independent contractor at Arise, you will have flexible hours and choose your schedule every 1-2 weeks. Some of their contracts pay up to $18 per hour. If you’d like to learn more about working at home with Arise you can read the review here.
Sykes
Sykes has work at home positions in Canada and the United States. They hire you on as an employee and not an independent contractor. Since you’ll be an employee, you will qualify for employee benefits including heath, dental, vision, and other perks. They offer positions with full-time and part-time hours. They commonly higher for their at home phone positions, but they sometimes have chat positions open too. You can read more about working at home with Sykes here.
Convergys
Convergys is always hiring customer service phone representative, but they sometimes hire Canadian and US residents to fill their online chat positions. These support rolls include billing, technical support, and sales. If you work as a phone agent you will also have the option to move up into a internal support role. You can see if they’re hiring over on their Work at Home Job Page.
Best Buy (Geek Squad)
Best Buy hires, what they call, Covert Agents under their brand Geek Squad to work at home supporting Mac, PC, Android, and other brands and equipment. They hire you as an employee and you’ll qualify for benefits. I have a friend who works for Best Buy at home in Canada, but they also have this position available in the US. This work at home chat position with Best Buy is typically full-time hours, and you can check their job board regularly to see if they’re hiring.
GitHub
GitHub is another SaaS company that helps developers and businesses create, manage, and share projects. Almost every developer job that you apply for, will most likely ask for your GitHub profile link. That said, they’re a popular, worldwide company and they need customer support professionals to hold down their business front. They’re almost always hiring work at home chat agents over on their job board.
Support.com
Support.com regularly hires work from home technical support agents. Their average support salary is around $10-$11 per hour, but some positions pay more, and if you bring a ton of experience to the table you can negotiate your pay accordingly. If you’re looking for a remote chat position, you can check support.com’s job board for openings.
SiteStaff
SiteStaff hires work at home chat agents to work part-time, 4 to 5 hour shifts. They provide service for businesses like dentists, financial planning firms, salons, chiropractors, and more. According to reviews I’ve read they offer a lot of flexibility with their shifts and they’re an overall great place to work. You can read more about SiteSaff in this review.
The Chat Shop
The Chat Shop hires worldwide. Don’t let their list of requirements scare you away from applying. If you have experience and can check off some of the requirement boxes, it’s worth trying to apply to get hired on especially if you want a non-phone work at home job in customer service. You can read more about their requirements and working at home with The Chat Shop here.
